Vicksburg, MS to Denham Springs, LA
Immediately after the surrender of Vicksburg, JBS and his regiment marched for 5 days in extreme heat, skirmishing along the way, until they drove the remaining Confederate forces to Jackson where they laid siege to the city from the 9th-17th. So, naturally, our next stop on this road trip was Jackson, MS.
We visited Battlefield Park and talked to the kids a little about how JBS had marched the whole distance we had driven.

We had lunch at Keifer's, a local Mediterranean restaurant, before checking out the old capital, a building JBS would have seen 154 years ago. The building is now Old Capital Museum and we spent some time looking through the exhibits.

JBS would have marched back to Vicksburg after the surrender of Jackson, we, instead, drove on down the road to once again reach the Louisiana state line.
We broke out the portable DVD player for the first time of the trip and it served as the right distraction to get us through to Denham Springs, LA where we will be staying the next two nights to visit with some dear friends we have not seen in years.
They met us for dinner at Walk-On's, another chain we do not have in Illinois, and we got our first taste of Louisianian food.

We are looking forward to a full day of visiting with our friends tomorrow.
