It is happening!
We found a block of days that worked for everyone and also found flights to fit within our budget and our schedule.
We ended up with an 8-night trip traveling Thursday - Friday. We thought we'd end up traveling more mid-week but we found fights for the same price traveling these days and it worked better with our tentative plan to spend the first three nights with family, then take a two-night side trip to Yosemite (but avoid being there for the height of the weekend crowds), then return for more time with family the last three nights.
So, airfare and the two nights in Yosemite are booked! Only thing we still need to book is our rental car.
We have started to work out a tentative itinerary and we are very excited!
This almost feels spontaneous for us – we do not usually plan a trip less than a year out!
