We have been fine-tuning this routine for our family one road trip at a time. Here is what we have found works for us (for now):
- Leave after breakfast; no later than 9am (usually earlier)
- John drives and it is my duty to deal with everything else: music, GPS, kids; a good road trip partner tries not to fall asleep
- Limit the electronics, have activity bags for the kids and games that encourage them to look out the window; if all else fails, pull out the electronics
- No snacking in the car; but keep some 'emergency' peanuts and water within reach
- Stop about every 2 hours to stretch legs, snack or meal, get gas if needed, and always potty right before getting back in the car; even if someone had to go at the start of the break, go again; bonus points for making the stop someplace interesting with something to see or do
- Only do 6-7 hours of driving a day with less than 3 hours of stops in a combination that allows us to arrive at our overnight accommodations by dinnertime; check-in, find a place to eat, then get back to the hotel for the night to unwind and sleep
- Stay at hotels with breakfast included to save time and money; pack cooler in back with drinks, snacks and possibly even lunch depending on the day's plans
